The not so clean cut version of the Beach Boys

The not so clean cut version of the Beach Boys

My friend Scotty.. aka Rubox… posted up on his facebook that he was listening to some Beach Boys…

— Scott listening and analyzing works by the Beach Boys. Very intrigued by vocal harmonies and arrangments, particularly “God Only Knows”. —

I mentioned that I had some early takes of Good Vibrations that made you listen to the final version differently… You can hear the instruments more… and all of a sudden.. I didn’t think that it was such a poppy corny song anymore… those guys are awesome musicians!  Anyways…. for you Soctty.. I’m posting these 2 up.  (side note… if you happen to come across this Valentina, thanks for giving me a copy of that CD!!)

Street Fighter… worse than I thought.

16 Mar

I’m definitely a big Street Fighter fan.  Like most of my friends, I’ve grown up playing the game.  So of course, when I heard about a new Street Fighter movie, I was a little bit excited at first.  I was hoping that it would make up for that horrible movie back in 94 that Van Damn was in and totally screwed up.  Its a shame that was Raul Julia’s last movie.

street_fighter

Seriously… how hard is it to make a good Street Fighter movie???  You could even just take the cartoon movies and put real people in them!!  As for this new movie, hopes of it making up for the last one went out the door early on.  As soon as I saw the promo poster and the trailer, I knew it was going to be bad.  Seriously… who approved the final graphics for that promo poster???  Kristen Kreuk as Chun-Li???  Granted she’s half Chinese,  but what??  Is a mainstream audience not ready for an actual Chinese girl to play the lead role!?!?  Well… at least Kristen Kreuk looks good right??

kristin_kreukchun-listreetfighterWell… in the movie… She never even rocks the actual Chun-Li outfit.  She never even wears anything sexy to make up for how bad the movie is.  Its a bad look when you walk in expecting a bad movie, and you still walk out disappointed!!  I almost wanted to stand up and walk out during a scene at a club where she makes eye contact with Bison’s main chick, and they dance around each other.  Chris Klein as Charlie Nash.  Seriously… how does this guy get any work?  He’s really the worst actor I’ve ever seen!!!  The one thing that kept me from walking out, was the thought that Bison might kill him off, cause that’s what happens in the real story.  Bison kills Nash, and that’s why Guile enters the tournament.  Michael Clarke Duncan… I thought he was cool in the past.  Like in Armageddon, or roles where he’s funny.  But after seeing him play Kingpin in Daredevil, and now Balrog…. I think he might actually be as bad a Chris Kelin.  Taboo as Vega, I thought could be cool.  Being a b-boy, he could have incorporated  some crazy moves, but nope.  Chun-Li kicked his ass in like a 45 second fight scene.  That’s right… the fight scenes were all pretty weak.  I could go on more about how bad it was…. but I’m sure a lot of you already assumed that.  Deep down, I was hoping that it would somehow impress me, but it didn’t.  Its right there with that 1994 Jean Claude VanSuck version.  The one thing that 1994 version had going for it was a pretty kick ass soundtrack.  Check out the tracklist:

sf-st

1. Street Fighter – Ice Cube
2. Come Widdit – Ahmad/Ras Kass/Saafir
3. One On One – NAS
4. Pandemonium – The Pharcyde
5. Street Soldier – Paris
6. Something Kinda Funky – Rally Ral
7. It’s A Street Fight – The B.U.M.S.
8. Life As…. – LL Cool J
9. Do You Have What It Takes? – Craig Mack
10. Straight To My Feet – Hammer/Deion Sanders
11. Rumbo N Da Jungo – Public Enemy (Chuck D)/The Wreck League
12. Rap Commando – Anotha Level
13. Worth Fighting For – Angelique Kidjo
14. Something There – Chage & Aska

Sorry I’m only sharing a few tracks… but if you want the whole thing…. you gotta dig for it.  Its going for almost 40 bucks used on Amazon.com.  Keep digging for the full album.. its worth it.  Cube comes as hard as does on Wicked.  The Pharcyde’s Pandemonium is Golden Age Hip Hop at its best.  Ahmad, Ras Kass, and Saafir on one track is a backpacker’s material for mastubation.  The B.U.M.S. and Craig Mack, I’m letting you have those tracks for download.  The only low point of the CD is Hammer with Deion Sanders.  Nuff said on that…. Anyways… check these out… and dig for the rest.

I’ve grown up as a Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince fan, and I’ve been blessed to open for DJ Jazzy Jeff a couple years back, at one of Will Smith’s movie wrap parties.  It was definitely on some “I wish all my gigs were like this!” type of shit.  There were 4 DJ’s that night, and every one had their own set up.  The set up they had for me was set up exactly how I asked for it.  So I walked up on stage, and the system looked just like my own set up at home.  The other 2 DJs were The Get Fresh Crew, as in Doug E. Fresh and The Get Fresh Crew, cause yes, Doug E Fresh was performing too.  The fact that I’m sharing a stage with people that I’ve grown up listening to puts me at a loss for words…  which is fine, cause I can’t really talk more about it anyway, cause I signed papers that say I can’t.

Besides all that, I met Jeff and his manager (whatsup Darnell!) and they’re cool people.  Today, I saw Jeff’s Twitter, and saw that he posted this compilation up for free.  I’m listening to it now as I type this.  I thought it was a mix, but instead… I’m assuming that they’re all his remixes of classic tracks.  Definitely worth downloading.  He’s remixed tracks from Biggie, Jay, Pharcyde, Wu-Tang, Nas, Audio Two, Black Moon, and The Juice Crew.  Click the picture above to download it.

K’Naan – “People Like Me” [LIVE]

Here I am again with K’Naan. For this performance, I really didn’t do anything besides push play, but I felt the song was left better without any extra cuts. Big shout out to Hip Hop Official for putting me on again!

B.Bless – Sunset Sessions v2 : Island Style BBQ Edition

B.Bless

B.Bless

The homie B.Bless from the AFF Crew sent me a link to his new mix the other day… it was perfect timing since I was havin a BBQ for my bday.  Its straight island music all the way through.  I know a lot of music, but I must admit… island music is stuff that I’m just not familiar with.  Its not really reggae, but kinda sounds like reggae.  Its definitely laid back, and just sounds nice!  I think in the whole mix, I recognized like one song that I knew.  So, wether the songs are old or new, they’re all new to me… and who doesn’t love new good music??  I do.  Anyways… download it… enjoy it.. its dope.

The Roots on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon

4 Mar

Music The Roots
There’s been talk about it on the internet, and last night we finally got to see it. The Roots are on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The greatest Hip Hop band, ever, have turned into a late night talk show house band. Does that mean that we’re not getting a new Roots album anytime soon? I know there’s been talk on the internet about ?uestlove saying that The Roots are retiring from major tours. Sucks for everyone overseas. But when you work as hard and travel as much as these guys have… I think they deserve it. Nothing wrong with a steady gig!

Its cool to see them on TV on a daily basis… and its cool that they’re not just there to play some background music. When Jimmy Fallon decided to “Slow Jam the News”, Black Thought got on the vocals and sang, as part of the bit. Check out the clip below.

Its gonna suck to not be able to see them live as often as before, but at least Jimmy Fallon introduced them properly, by saying “I almost can’t believe how lucky I am…The Roots!” The show opening even gives them a proper introduction by referring to them as “The Legendary Roots Crew”. To top it off, when Justin Timberlake comes out… he just points and says “wow”, while Jimmy Fallon says “Amazing right?” and also mentions that “The Roots can play anything”.

If this doesn’t put the Roots in a mainstream category, I don’t know what will. Cause seriously… at this point… who hasn’t heard of The Roots? Well… I’m sure there might be some people out there that are being introduced to The Roots for the first time, through this show. I figure I’ll share the first time that I was introduced to The Roots. Check out Silent Treatment.

Raphael Saadiq @ The House of Blues

4 Mar

thewayiam

Monday night I was helping out my friend Ronnie Jr. with an interview.  We shot an interview with Raphael Saadiq for a website that he works for.  The site is LosAngelesIAM.com.  Check out the site in the next day or two for the interview.  Our interview was scheduled for 6, and we didn’t get in there to interview him til after 10.  All part of the game I guess.  I’ve been a Raphael Saadiq fan since Tony Toni Tone’s first album, so it was pretty cool to meet the guy and shake his hand.

On a cool note, that we didn’t expect.  The tour manager felt bad that we waited around so long, so she gave us her personal pair of tickets.  Now I’m not one to waste free tickets, so Ronnie and I brought the gear back to my truck, then went back to check out a bit of the show.

I can’t believe I forgot about how great a performer that guy is!!  We got in right on his second song, and stuck around for the whole old school medley then left after that.  Cause let’s be real.. Ronnie is good company.. but watching a Raphael Saadiq show without my girlfriend is pretty lame… But, like I said… I did stick around for the medley, where he took it back to the early 90′s with “Just Me & You”, “It Never Rains”, “Lay Your Head on My Pillow”, “Anniversary”, “Ask of You”, and a few more.  If you’re reading this post looking for old joints like that….. sorry.. you’ll have to check back another time.  For now… you need to check out his new album “The Way I See It”.  He takes it back to a classic R&B sound from maybe the late 60s.  Almost reminds me of some old Smokey or other classic Motown.  Go buy it!!!  Maybe this track will help convince you…

Busta Rhymes @ Club Nokia

busta_rhymes

Last Sunday we got to go check out the Busta Rhymes show at Club Nokia.  (Thanks Leonora for the tickets!!)  This was my first time at Club Nokia, and it a pretty nice venu.  Its like a bigger House of Blues, but less personality and pretty generic looking.  I’ve seen Busta perform a few times, and every time he definitely rocks it.  This time was no exception.. well… except for the last half of the show.  Busta and Spliff were drinking through the whole show, and I’m pretty sure that they were pretty drunk by the end of the show.  He just kept talking and pretty much stopped performing.  People were starting to leave.

But…. don’t get it twisted!!  When the show was good.. it was damn good!!!  They’re always rockin with energy.. and what would a show in LA be without any guest appearances?  Aside from havin Roc Raida as his DJ (whom Busta said is now officially part of FlipMode), Busta also brought out Xzibit, and Raekwon!  They rocked 2 songs each before handing it back to Busta.  He also had Ron Browz come out with him towards the end to do his new joint Arab Money.  The dance is corny, but people love that track.  I swear.. for like a month, I thought Arab Money and Pop Champagne was the same song… oh well.. same producer.

He definitely dropped some classics.  When they mentioned 1992… he had to do his verse in Scenario.  But… unfortunately, other than Scenario… nothing from his days with Leaders of the New School.  Other than the drunk babbling at the end of the show… it was overall it was a good show…

Since Busta didn’t do any LONS stuff… I’ll leave you with this.
