Santana – Umi Says (cover)

Not that Mos Def needs any sort of validation on his place in music, but when a Legend like Carlos Santana decides to cover one of your songs, it definitely says something. Check it:

The original version of Sara Smile by Hall & Oates is an amazing song, PERIOD. Now, when it comes to live covers, this Brian McKnight version that I came across on YouTube gives it a good run for its money.
Here’s Hall & Oates doing their own song, but I think I’d rather listen to the recorded album version.

I’ve been involved with Scratch DJ Academy for close to two years now. Before I got there, I thought… “a school for DJing?? Really?!?!” Then when I saw the classes, it all made sense. Now I teach classes myself. So to show that we’ve got some quality DJs coming out of there, I decided to bring along two of our graduates this week. Come on by! It’ll be good and funky time as always.

I hope you can all make it out for another Sugar Foot Friday at Verdugo Bar. This time we’re bringing along a good friend, Vise Versa from the group Deux Process. If you scroll back in the blog, you can check out the music video for “Story of My Life” that I shot for them not too long ago. We’re gearing up to shoot a new video for their track Ballad of Lost Angels (which you can download at the bottom of this post). I figured, what better time than now to bring out the homie to rock a set with us! Be sure to look out for their new album “The Price of Dreams” coming soon!

In case you didn’t already know, Sugar Foot is now every Friday at Verdugo Bar. So on any given Friday, you’ll catch Hey Mesa, Dark Alley, Bad Knews, or myself. I’ll be there this week with a guest DJ. I’m bringing along DJ Hapa, from my Scratch LA Family. Come on out for some good vibes, and good music!!! I also share my drink tokens.

First off… I didn’t come up with the name for the party. Now of course, I didn’t fight it. Anyways, that’s all besides the point. Come hang out with us and have a drink or two, or more. I’ll be doing the night with Hey Mesa and Bad Knews. Let’s call it an unofficial prequel to the 20 year anniversary of our DJ crew (details on that coming up soon).
No cover, no dress code. Just straight out bar status, with some good music, and good vibes. Hope to see you there!

I’m really looking forward to this one. If you don’t know about The Bridge, I put some links below the flyer in the post. They link to recorded sets from my last appearances at The Bridge. As always, its an honor to be a line up with good DJs, and I always like when I get to play good and fun music that I actually enjoy. So I hope to see you there this weekend!! Doors open at 9, and I go on second, so be sure to get there early. Be sure to RSVP… its free, the music is good, and the vodka is free for the first hour. Do you really have to think about it? Just click on the flyer to RSVP, and you’re good to go!!

I’ve known this dude Chuey since about 2002 or 2003… He’s kinda done a lot. You should google him if you’re interested. His ustream show has had guest DJs, artists, big name, no name, up and comers… check it out sometime. A few weeks back, he had me come in and rock a set on an all vinyl night. Dirty records, skipping needles, lack of practice, not hearing songs in a long time… but still.. gotta love the fact that its all wax, and not everyone has the shit that I’m dropping. I was lagging on putting up… but here it is now!! I come on around 1:05:45. I’ll have the audio posted up at some point. but for now.. check it out here.

I just got home from doing a set on Rehab Radio. Its put on by the staff of Scratch DJ Academy Los Angeles. Honest to say… this is dope crew of DJs to be associated with. There’s a lot of talent going on there. Anyways… I went in tonight not really knowing what to play. Just kinda made up a lot of it along the way (along with some suggestions from Cygnet). Playing in a room full of DJs, is the hardest crowd to play for… but it seems like everyone enjoyed it. I’ll take that compliment any day. Here’s the set for when you’re bored at work. Kid Fish is on the first half. I come on somewhere in the 1 hour mark of the show.
